Medical equipment left inside patients after operations costs the NHS millions

Filed under: Medical & Clinical Negligence — admin @ 12:11 pm

With the amount of operations which happen each year in hospitals the vast majority go well and the patients go home and make a full recovery, thanks to the expertise of the surgeons and their medical staff.

There are occasions when a medical mistake is made and the patient is sent home with a swab left inside after an operation. This can then become infected and cause severe problems for the patient.

On any occasion when a swab, screw a clip or in fact any other foreign body is left inside a patient by a surgeon, then a claim for medical accident compensation can be made.

With the Freedom of Information which has been released, the government figures show that on average twice a week, foreign bodies are left inside patients.

These medical errors cost the NHS millions of pounds a year with the average medical negligence claim for this type of mistake worth around £18,000.

There was a case where in 2008 a needle tip was left inside a patient and resulted in a medical negligence claim being made. The payment to the patient was £115,000. There have been many other claims made for similar medical mistakes involving a needle being left inside after an operation.

It has been said by experts that many people do not realise a medical error has happened as there are no side effects. In some cases the effects of a foreign body being left inside may be noticed years afterwards.

Swab left inside patient results in neligence during labour medical claim

Filed under: Medical & Clinical Negligence — admin @ 8:55 am

We recently accepted a claim where our client went to hospital for the birth of her baby as she was in labour. During the birth her baby’s heart stopped so a Cesarean Section was carried out.

After the birth of her child she stayed in hospital for two days. Whilst there an infection appeared in the clients stomach area. The client was given antibiotics for the infection and was discharged and went home. The lady returned to her GP as the infection got worse but nothing was done.

The lady later discovered a large lump on her stomach which was approx 10 x 12 cm, just above the area where the Cesarean Section was carried out.

The lady called the emergency GP out at around five in the morning who changed her antibiotics. As a result of changing antibiotics she felt no better and went on to feel sick, dizzy and develop leg pains.

As the the lady continued to get worse her mother called a paramedic from Southampton hospital. The paramedic wrote a report about Poole Hospital and their inability to check the clients wound, a swab was left inside the body of the lady. The paramedic saw a swab coming out of the clients Cesarean Section cut area approx 11 days after her birth. This swab has been left dangerously inside her which had caused her infection and lump. The paramedic told her she had to get emergency help. The district nurse was called who removed the swab.

The lady was rushed into hospital a week after the nurse pulled the swab out and has had several more visits since. Our client was told due to her hospital medical negligence she was lucky to be alive. To this day the lady has been left with a large painful scar which itches and burns.

Medical negligence leaves man infertile

Filed under: Medical & Clinical Negligence — admin @ 1:10 pm

A medical blunder has left a man infertile after going into hospital for an operation on his testicle. The man who was treated in West Suffolk Hospital in Bury St Edmunds had part of the wrong testicle removed before the medical staff noticed their mistake.

The surgeons operating on the man needed to remove the epididymis, which is a tube used to store mature sperm. The medical mistake meant that they removed the right side instead of the left. The operation had to continue as the man still needed the correct side to be operated on.

Having removed both sides the man will be left infertile opening the door to a possible claim for medical negligence to be made.

Following the medical mistake, an investigation has been launched and as a result more stringent safety procedures have been introduced to prevent other medical errors of this type.

Medical Negligence at Birth Compensation Claims

Filed under: Medical & Clinical Negligence — admin @ 10:54 am

There are numerous numbers of medical negligence compensation claims made every year, for a variety of reasons. If you have suffered what you believe to be a reasonable level of neglect from health staff, which has resulted in you being injured or a condition made worse, then a claim for Medical Negligence Compensation may be possible.

A resent case involves a mother who suffers from a heart condition and was being closely monitored by a consultant as she was pregnant.

The consultant said due to her heart condition, she would need to have a C section baby as she would not be able to push hard enough to deliver the baby naturally.

When the client was about to give birth and was in the maternity ward, staff told her they were going to override the advice of the client’s specialist consultant and deliver the baby naturally.

As the client was giving birth the advice of the heart consultant proved to be right and the client was not able to push hard enough to deliver her baby.

The baby’s head was out slightly but needed to be pushed back in, so staff did this by putting a suction pad over her head which they then twisted causing the babies skin on her head to tear. The highly visible tear on the baby’s head stretched right around her head. When the baby was back in, they then delivered her by C section as originally advised by the heart consultant.

To this day the baby has scarring to her forehead which is highly visible. Had the staff taken the advice of the consultant this would have been avoided.
